'Pilates....is designed to give you suppleness, natural grace, and skill that will be unmistakably reflected in the way you walk, in the way you play, and in the way you work.'
- Joseph Pilates

My interest in Pilates began 19 years ago when a GP recommended I try it to alleviate lower back pain during pregnancy.  Pilates at the time was relatively new but I found that it really helped to ease my back and also to strengthen my stomach muscles and pelvic floor.  I continued with classes right up to the birth of my daughter and then returned to them soon after.  Over time, I realised that lots of people I knew, with various health problems, would also benefit from doing Pilates.  That is when I decided to train as a teacher so that I could help others by sharing the benefits.  I trained with the Body Control Pilates Association in London and qualified as a Matwork Teacher in July 2011.  I am now also a Supervising Teacher in the Essex area and help students with their teaching hours required for the BCP course.

Body Control Pilates was founded in 1995 to make the benefits of Pilates accessible to all, irrespective of age and fitness level.  Body Control created a unique programme that takes you progressively and safely towards Joseph Pilates' original work.  Many of the original classical exercises have been broken down so that they can be taught progressively whilst establishing good movement skills.  The eight principles which support their approach to the teaching and practice of Pilates are Concentration, Relaxation, Alignment, Breathing, Centring, Coordination, Flowing movements and Stamina.  BCP is Europe's largest professional Pilates organisation, and it is widely seen as a benchmark for safe and effective teaching of the highest quality.  As part of their membership with the BCPA, all teachers work to a laid down Code of Practice and undergo continual professional development to keep their skills and knowledge up-to-date.
